Why Multiple Streams?

It was a far different world back in the 1950s.  Dad went to work and Mom stayed at home to raise the kids.  The family ate dinner together.  Dad traded in the car every year for a new model and the neighbors came over to admire it.  One income was plenty for a family to live well.

Today, families need two incomes…and they still struggle with the bills.  If one income gets wiped out by a job layoff, it can be devastating.  We need to find ways to diversify our revenue sources, supporting ourselves with income streams that we can own and relying less on wages from a J.O.B. (Just Over Broke).

Building multiple income streams is the way to achieve financial freedom.

Don’t get stuck on somebody else’s treadmill.

Prosperous people have always known that not all income streams are created equal.

So, I ask you:  Do you know the difference between linear and residual income?

Put it another way:  How many times do you get paid per hour?  Yes, you read that right.  Not how much do you get paid per hour, but how many times are you paid for every hour that you work?

Salaries are linear because you are paid only once for your effort.  If your clients go out of business, or decide they don’t need your services…if you want to go on vacation, or if you get sick and can’t work  .   .   .   the money stops coming in.  If you don’t show up for work, your paycheck doesn’t either.  You are, in effect, trading hours for dollars.

I don’t like that arrangement.  It does not offer financial security or the freedom to call my time my own.  After all my work, I would have built nothing.  That’s not what I want.  Not what you want either, I’m sure.

The gold rush of the 21st century

On the other hand, residual income pays you many times over for every single hour of work that you do.  Residual income (also called passive or recurring income) compensates you over time for work done one time.  An example would be the additional income from royalties earned by artists, writers, and musicians.

Here is another example.  Affiliate programs that pay you recurring commissions reward you for the lifetime of the customer.  Not only do you earn a commission on the initial sale, but you will continue to earn recurring commissions for as long as that customer remains active.  Now that’s what I call building for the future!
